Silences Are Not
Silences are not always punishments.
Better yet, nor should they
ever be.
Sometimes they’re simply carried over from a past
where the child had to stay quiet and hide
just until Trouble passed.
Sometimes they’re old habits from enough time passed
that they’re nearly branded inside
like other scars from the past.
Silences are not always punishments
Especially if that’s all they
used to be.
